Can creative genius be an excuse to go scot free for raping a minor ?? Apparently a certain section of the media and a handful of pseudo intelligentsia do think so !! The renowned film maker Roman Polanski we all know has been courting controversy for all the wrong reasons these days.. Accused of raping a minor way back in 1977 he fled whilst investigations were still being carried out, only to be arrested by the Swiss police recently as he was on his way to Zurich to accept a lifetime achievement award. Why are people taking such a soft stand on him, some even have the gumption to suggest that the courts should allow him to go scot free !! I fail to see any reason to stand by a man accused of such a gruesome act.
There are several excuses that seem to be doing the rounds..a childhood that passed in shadows of the Holocaust , a tumultuous romantic life. But are they reason enough ? And then of course is his cinema. I’ve seen The Pianist and have no qualms about accepting that it is one of the most brilliant films made about the Holocaust .. but I think we need to look at Polanski as any other criminal his cinematic brilliance should be for once put in the background Instead of spending reams of newsprint on his cinema he should be looked at as any other man accused of a serious offence…Its time we disassociate Polanski from his “creative genius” image… Is it so difficult to do that ??
